What happens to Social Security disability benefits when you reach retirement age?

I'm 56 and am on Social Security disability. Do my benefits change when I reach my full retirement age of 66 years and 4 months? — Greg M.

Your benefits will change in name only starting with the month you reach full retirement age, according to Kia Green, a senior public affairs specialist with the Social Security Administration. At that point, they will be called retirement benefits rather than disability benefits. There are no actions you need to take, and the switch shouldn't affect the size of your benefits.
